In the Agricultural Farm of Palencia, founded in 1905 Don José Cascón and Don Gregorio Matallana, and in the later Agricultural Experiment Station of the Castilla-León Region (which included the Station of Viticulture and Enology of Palencia, the Cereal Growing Station and the Center for Improvement of the Sheep Churra), has its origin the Higher Technical School of Agrarian Engineering of Palencia.

Throughout these years, what was initially called Escuela Universitaria Técnica Agrícola became the Polytechnic University Agricultural School and finally reached the current denomination of Technical School of Agricultural Engineering. At our “La Yutera” Campus we currently offer 4 degree courses, 2 Masters with professional attributions, 4 Masters of research and professionalization, an international Master Erasmus Mundus and a new Master on Agri-food Business Management, constituting one of the widest ranges of «green engineering» in the national university landscape.

Our wide range of infrastructures (cultivation fields, laboratories, greenhouses, wineries, test stations and characterization of fertilizers and seeders), not only enable our students to be properly trained and taught, but also offer an important service to many Spanish and foreign companies through the establishment of research agreements. These allow our students to have a first contact with research but also contribute to the extension of scientific and technological knowledge through the creation of patents, technology-based companies and an endless number of publications of a scientific and informative nature. It is enough to note that more than a hundred companies have benefited from some agreement with the school, either for research or to host students during their training period. In this aspect, our School has been, for several years, the center of the University of Valladolid and one of the Castile and Leon with more students realizing internships.

The two technological centers that have emerged in the Campus (ITAGRA and CETECE) together with the Institute of Sustainable Forest Management and the Chair of Mycology complement our training and research activities, while offering our students the opportunity to practice, and to the companies the possibility of establishing different collaboration agreements.

The collaboration with the Professional Colleges of Agricultural Technical Engineers, Forestry Technical Engineers, Forestry Engineers and Agricultural Engineers has been constant from the beginning of the early Agrarian School. This could not be otherwise, due to the common concern for the improvement of the professionals’ formation. In many occasions, it has been recognized the optimum preparation of our students, who have received different awards granted by the professional colleges over the years.

Our presence and projection at national and international level is constantly increasing. Thus we have national mobility agreements SICUE with the different Spanish universities teaching degrees in the agro-food, oenological and forestry fields, and ERASMUS mobility agreements for teachers and students with 16 European countries such as France, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Finland, Sweden … But also exchange and collaboration agreements with North American universities such as Oregon and Davis; Ibero-American universities in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Bolivia; and even in countries like Niger or Ethiopia where cooperation projects are under development. Our participation in different international networks allows us to be at the forefront of the forestry, agri-food and oenological sectors, both in teaching and research fields.

Nowadays we have in the School 8 research groups recognized by the University of Valladolid, GIR, all of them are multidisciplinary teams that cover the different topics of work:

  • sustainable forest management
  • production and feeding of ruminants
  • food industry technology: cereals and derivatives
  • advanced technologies for sustainable rural development
  • viticulture and oenology
  • ecology and conservation of flora and fauna
  • Soils: quality and sustainability (SQS)
  • research on wood structure and technology

Our university extension activities are diversified and continuously increasing. Thus we offer congresses, courses, one-day meetings of the different degrees, which are happening throughout the year and constitute an open offer to students, professionals and all the people interested in the different topics involved.

At the Higher Technical School of Agricultural Engineering we are committed to the knowledge and improvement of the environment that surrounds us.
